Ajai Jhala


AJAIAjai Jhala is the Chief Executive Officer, BBDO India. He and Josy Paul (Chairman & Chief Creative Officer, BBDO India) set up the agency from the backseat of Josy’s car in 2008. The agency pioneered the idea of brand movements with the belief that India needs more ‘acts not ads’.

Ajai is very passionate about breaking stereotypes and championing the cause of gender inequality. All the award winning campaigns for BBDO India – including the Cannes awards winning Whisper – Touch the Pickle, Ariel – Share the Load and Visa among others, mirror his ideals. Known to be an astute businessman and a brand-builder in the industry, Ajai brings his global work-experience and exposure to every campaign that BBDO India creates.

An industry veteran, Ajai has been in advertising for over two decades. He has worked with the Lintas Group for almost two decades, at various points in his career. He joined Lowe in 2002 and in his six years with the agency he has worked between London, Paris and Bangkok. Unilever’s hair care business required him to work out of London, and he looked after the oral care business from Paris. He was also the business and planning head on Omo, the detergent brand, whose name varies, depending on the markets it exists in (in India, it is Surf). The multiple global award winning campaign ‘Dirt is Good’ was executed across the Asian markets under his leadership.

Prior to moving to Lowe, he was with O&M New York (for 2 years) and Lowe (then Ammirati Puris Lintas) having served as Senior Vice-President, Planning(New York), General Manager, Personal Care, Unilever and Cadbury (Mumbai) and International Coordinator, Home Care – Unilever (London).
